Description
The Monstera plant’s most recognizable feature is its large, heart-shaped leaves that often display unique holes and cuts, referred to as fenestrations. These fenestrations give the plant a distinctively artistic and decorative appearance, leading to its nickname “Swiss Cheese Plant.” The fenestrations are more prominent in mature leaves and are thought to aid the plant in capturing and dispersing light in its natural habitat.
Based on availability, container may be substituted with that of equal or greater value. Color and pattern may vary.
Caring for Monstera:
- Light Requirements: Monstera plants prefer bright, indirect light. They can tolerate some degree of direct sunlight, especially in the morning or evening, but too much direct sunlight can scorch their leaves. Avoid placing them in deep shade, as this can lead to leggy growth and reduced fenestration.
- Watering: It’s important to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch (2.5 cm) of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering or letting the plant sit in water can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: Monstera plants thrive in humid environments. They appreciate higher humidity levels, especially during the growing season. You can increase humidity by misting the leaves, placing a humidity tray nearby, or using a room humidifier.
- Temperature: These plants prefer temperatures between 65°F to 85°F (18°C to 29°C). They can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures but are sensitive to frost.
- Soil: A well-draining, rich potting mix is ideal for Monstera plants. You can use a mix that includes peat moss, perlite, and pine bark.
